Description
El Capitan.
El capitan is one of the first landmarks that you will see as you drive into Yosemite Valley. This granite wall rises 3,000 feet off of the valley floor and is truly a sight to see. From the valley floor El Capitan is visible as you enter into the park and is prominently displayed to see from most points in the valley.
Many time I will sit in the meadows not far from El Capitan and try to find all of the mountain climbers scailing the wall. Trying to find the climbers with the plain eyes is almost impossible and a good pair of binoculars is recommended. Even with a good pair of binoculars finding climbers can be difficult. After you've studied the wall a on a number of different trips you begin to learn some of the routes they take. Normally you can find the climbers hanging out in the seams and creases.
One of my favorite qualitites of El Capitan is the different "moods" seen from the quality of light hitting the valley walls. This image was caught as a storm was starting to clear the valley. The clouds were breaking up overhead but seemed to be clinging to the walls.
