Description
Many Catholics and non-Catholics alike probably think that St Peter’s is the most important church in Rome Italy. However, it is the Archbasilica of St John Lateran that is the oldest and highest ranking of the four papal major basilicas in Rome. It is the pope’s church, the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome where the Bishop of Rome presides. As such it is the home of the bishop’s cathedra or chair, located in the apse behind the main altar. This is the oldest church in Rome, the first structure on this site was built in CE 318. The design of the mosaic above the chair originally dates from the 4th or 5th century with repairs and additions in the 13th century and further restoration in the 19th century. The official name of the church is the Sacrosanct Papal Cathedral Greater Roman Archbasilica of the Holy Saviour and the Saints John the Baptist and John the Evangelist at the Lateran, the Mother and Head of all the Churches of the City and the World.
